I have been on Joe’s trail on and off for about ten years. I received a Colorado Humanities Research Grant which has helped offset some of the never-ending research time and costs here in Colorado.
Over the years I have tracked Joe and his family from Maine and New York to Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Minnesota, back to Wisconsin, back to Minnesota, North Dakota, Colorado, Oregon, and California. Whew! During the Civil War years South Dakota, Alabama, and Texas also need to be included in the list because the family members who served as soldiers play significant roles in tracking down part of Joe’s legendary escapades!
Tracking Joe’s two surviving granddaughters has proved challenging. The trek has taken me to California where I last find the young ladies in Long Beach in the 1930 census. My goal is to find Joe’s living descendants and contact them about their own family lore and/or documents about Joe.
I will post my discoveries as they reveal themselves. This will certainly prove to be an interesting ride!
